Playtime with Henry and Lilly

8/17/2012:

Pictures from this summer:

This is how Lilly travelled back from Tennessee with me:

She's literally crawling into a cardboard as we drive.  She spent the entire trip from Little Rock to OKC scrunched into the box.

This is how Henry likes to sit on the couch:
His head is against the back of the couch, his bottom is on the seat of the couch, and he's propped up by pillows and ready for loving.

Sam-o and LillyLou at the dog park:
Sam is striking a scarily similar pose to a picture he had taken when he rescued some puppies from a park in Nashville.  The man lives in patterns.

It finally cooled down a bit here in OKC (read:  a high of 90!!!  So cool!), and Team Hong seized the chance to go to the Norman dog park.  Henry didn't bite anyone, which is always good, and Lilly cautiously explored the place.  Here is a picture of Lilly Lou and me on a cool Saturday morning:

I used to own this pair of shoes.  Now I own one of those shoes and pieces of the other shoe.  Way to go, labs, way to go.

After being inspired by two remarkable women I know in Nashville, I have taken the bull by the horns and gone hiking out here in Oklahoma.  Both times I've gone to Lake Thunderbird.    The first time, it was just Henry and me.  The second time, Sam went with Henry and me.  We hiked the green trail to the yellow trail to the red trail, and then we swam in the lake to cool down.  Here are some pics from the second trip:

I'm carrying water for all of us.

Who is that handsome little man?

We're headed into the water!  A swimming break was so welcome after getting lost in the woods for bit.

 Henry cooling off his tummy.

I'm leading the little guy out into the water for a swimming lesson.

I would love to be able for these posts to show as new posts, as opposed to drawing a line and creating a huge list of "comments."  If anyone can help, please let me know how I can do that.

In other news, Henry is safely home from his neutering.  He did very well.  Lilly went on a roadtrip to St.Louis, Ohio, Tennessee, and Arkansas with momma.  She got to meet all sorts of people and dogs, and she had a wonderful time.  Since returning to Oklahoma, Lilly has been sent to the vet's office to be spayed.  During her surgery, the vet discovered that Lilly was pregnant (very, very early stage) with eleven puppies!  Oh my.  We aborted them for her health, social responsibility, and our own care-taking limits.  In addition, they were fathered by Henry, who might be her brother, so there might have been some incest going on.  Lilly is now resting comfortably under the bed.

6/11/2012:

While on the family's 3:30 pm walk, we saw one cottonmouth snake, one baby red-eared turtle, and many fish.  We also saw a large turtle take a quick dive into the water.  This evening, while out walking, we saw this fine fellow:

This is just the last half of him -- the rest of him was going under the sidewalk.  I've seen him before, and based on what I've seen of him and the other snakes in the swamp by our house, I'm guessing he's another cottonmouth.  We'll be extra vigilant to avoid getting bitten!

In other news, this is what we see when we go on our family walks:

This is the porta potty at the corner of our main street.  Someone painted the word "Shitter" on it, which we find to be hilarious.  (Obviously, someone took offense and then painted over the title.)  We refer to this landmark as "le shitteur" with a French accent.

This is our swamp!  Here you can see the tall grasses that blow in the wind.  In the mornings, it is full of red-winged blackbirds.

The route "to the stop sign" --- at this point, we've already passed le shitteur and turned left.

Wildflowers with a side of German shepherd.

Henry's been at the kennel since yesterday.  We're going to check on him today and take him some chicken jerky, and we might even play him his favorite Karmin song:  Henry's song!

Well, Lilly is in heat.  This means that she's spent at least the last week-and-a-half dripping blood.  She's now progressed into the stage where she is mounting everything, and Henry is BESIDE himself.  He's not fixed, and so it has been horrible for him because he cannot control himself.  Henry is literally panting all the time and won't eat or potty because he's so worked up.  We had to give him a sedative last night just to get him to calm down to sleep.  As of this morning, he has continually tried mounting the male cat and Ella, who does not appreciate such gestures.  Lilly will be going on a long road trip to Ohio next week for over a week, so we just have to make it until then.  When she comes back, she will be through her heat cycle and will be ready to be spayed.  We are thinking that until Lilly goes on her road trip, Henry is going to have to be kenneled to give him some peace.  I'm trying to push for him to be neutered while he's having his mini-spa vacation . . .  we'll see.
